By requiring welfare recipients to pass random drug screenings, society can promote a drug free and healthier lifestyle among this population. Drug abuse has been reported to be up to fifty percent higher among welfare recipients than their counterparts*. By requiring random drug screenings, drug abuse can be detected earlier, and help can be given to those who need it. Drug abuse has been shown to lead to diseases such as paranoia, psychosis, lung damage, and seizures among others (Heath Risks Associated With Use or Abuse). Illness among this population only increases the financial burden on the welfare system.
